Sergeant Isaac Underwood

Sergeant Isaac Underwood (1723-1793), son of John Underwood and Abigail Flagg, served for a total of two days as part of Captain Caleb Kingsbury’s Company as they matched on the alarm of 19 April 1775. His service is credited to the town of Needham, although at various times in his life he was also associated with Natick. The Underwood family homestead was located in the western portion of what was then called Needham, an area referred to as the Needham Leg. Isaac Underwood’s family was one of several families involved in a series of petitions and land swaps that saw this area of Natick shuttled between the two towns.

Underwood had previously served in the French and Indian War under Captain John Coolidge. He fathered six children with his wife Grace. Many other members of the greater Underwood family also served during the Revolution. Because the family had branches in many towns including Natick, Needham, and Sudbury their service records are likely intermingled.
